Periodontitis has a genetic element The Dentalyse™ Molecular Testing Service offers a genetic analysis for the detection of IL-1 polymorphisms associated with an increased susceptibility to periodontal disease. Patients positive for the specific polymorphisms can develop periodontal disease even with a reduced quantity of pathogenic bacteria. Disease progression is significantly faster than in patients without the polymorphism and requires more aggressive physical therapy. The GenoType™ PST test from Dentalyse™ provides a genetic analysis of the IL-1 polymorphism permitting the dentist to develop an individual treatment plan to prevent, treat and restrict the development of periodontal disease to minimise tooth loss. Where disease has already progressed, determination of genetic status using the GenoType PST test enables the dentist to assess potential for success of restorative therapy.  The service is simple to use providing a comprehensive report on the genetic status. Patient specimens are collected locally at the dental surgery by means of a simple buccal mucosal smear using the sampling kit provided Free of Charge by the Dentalyse™ service. Samples are sent for analysis to the Dentalyse™ laboratory in Merseyside. Results are generated within 5 working days of receipt of the patient sample.
